About the Item

Etruria, Staffordshire, comma marks at base date 1800-1820, sprigged bas-relief decoration alternating bell flowers and acanthus leaves, an oak leaf and acorn wreath around rim, impressed "WEDGWOOD/8/,," at base, 3 1/2 x 8 in. Wedgwood released the following copy with their modern production of this bowl in the early 2000s: The Acanthus bowl is the archetype of Josiah Wedgwood's work. With its simple shape and restrained acanthus leaf decoration it brings together a number of strands— the similarity to aged cast bronze, the motifs that reach back two thousand years and more to classical times and a sense of the truth of Josiah's writing that "the black is sterling and will last forever."
