About the Item

Mid-Century Icon: "Homemaker" Pattern Plate by Enid Seeney for Ridgway (1960s) A quintessential example of British Mid-Century Modern design, this ceramic plate features the iconic "Homemaker" pattern, originally designed by Enid Seeney (1931–2011) for Ridgway Potteries in 1957. This graphic black-and-white design became the definitive tableware of the post-war era. The illustration features a stylized, floating arrangement of contemporary 1950s domestic objects set against a background of scratchy "Calder-esque" lines. Identifiable motifs include a Robin Day reclining chair, a Sigvard Bernadotte sofa, a kidney-shaped coffee table with a potted plant, and modernist cutlery. Originally sold exclusively through Woolworth's, the "Homemaker" range democratized modern design, bringing high-style aesthetics into the average British home. This specific piece dates to the 1960s production run, serving as a nostalgic snapshot of the era's aspirations. Markings: Printed Mark: Oval backstamp reading: Ridgway Potteries Ltd / HOMEMAKER / Made in Staffordshire England. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The black transfer print remains crisp and distinct. No chips, cracks, or crazing. Measurements: Diameter: 7 inches (17.8 cm) Height: 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) Historical Context: Enid Seeney was a pioneering female designer who trained at the Burslem School of Art. Her "Homemaker" design (originally titled "Furniture") was initially rejected as too radical for the mass market. However, a Woolworth's buyer spotted a prototype coffee set in 1957 and placed an order that would keep the pattern in production until 1970. As noted in her obituary (The Guardian, 2011), the design depicted "domestic items, some of which were far beyond the reach of the average family," offering a visual "dream board" of modern living. Today, examples of "Homemaker" are held in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). (Ref: NY7961-xkl)
