About the Item

Pair of Italian Castelli Majolica Bases Circa 1800 A fine pair of Italian Castelli majolica bases for large vases, dating to around 1800, exemplifying the high-quality craftsmanship for which Castelli ceramics are celebrated. Each base is richly decorated with winged cherubs (putti) seated on marble plinths, surrounded by flowers and plants. The cherubs hold baskets of grapes, mirrors, and musical instruments, while butterflies and two-colored bows appear between the figures, adding decorative variety and charm. The bases are painted in the classic Castelli palette of ochre yellow and pale blue, applied across the entire surface with characteristic precision and vibrancy. Castelli majolica, produced by workshops including the prominent Grue and Gentile families, is widely admired by collectors and considered among the finest ceramics of the 17th to 19th centuries. These bases reflect both the technical skill and the decorative imagination for which Castelli majolica is renowned.
