About the Item

Large and evocative decorative jug produced in Montopoli d’Arno, Tuscany, circa 1920. A powerful and sculptural object, deeply rooted in the Italian ceramic tradition, where functionality and ornament coexist in a richly expressive language. The generous globular body is finely decorated with polychrome motifs inspired by nature and folklore: stylized foliage, acorns and a striking bird rendered with confident, almost narrative brushwork. The warm, earthy ground is enlivened by greens, ochres, reds and deep blues, applied with a vibrant, painterly hand that speaks of artisanal freedom rather than repetition. The elongated neck is adorned with geometric bands and rhythmic vertical striping, while the boldly shaped spout and sinuous black handle lend the piece a strong architectural presence. The surface shows a beautifully aged patina, with wear and tonal variations that testify to its age and authenticity, enhancing its poetic and timeworn character. Both sculptural and decorative, this jug stands as a compelling example of early 20th-century Tuscan pottery, equally suited to a curated interior, a collector’s cabinet or as a standalone statement piece.
