About the Item

Large English Pearlware Mocha Earthworm Jug, Staffordshire or Northern England, Circa 1810-20. A handsome and generously proportioned example of English Mocha ware, this pearlware jug displays the bold, abstract decoration that made the style so popular. Its stately, bulbous form is anchored by a sturdy loop handle with refined leaf-molded terminals. Its impressive scale and robust, bulbous cylindrical body suggest its use as a "pub jug" for serving ale or cider. The decoration is organized into crisp, horizontal bands of colored slip. The focal point is a wide, cool gray band featuring a vibrant tricolor "earthworm" or serpentine motif undulating around the body. This fluid central design is framed by precisely incised blue lines on a lighter blue ground, demonstrating the potter's remarkable control. A quintessential piece of Regency-era utilitarian pottery, it combines rustic charm with a strikingly modern aesthetic.
