About the Item

English Pearlware pottery blue printed tray, The Angry Lion Pattern, Circa 1815-20 The Unusual English pottery footed tray is pearlware and is printed with a rare pattern known as "The Angry Lion" by a maker, as yet, unknown. The tray has a plain loop handle on each side with six recessed panels in the central well each printed with the "Angry Lion" pattern. The exterior with a dark blue background with scrolling leaves is printed with partial cartouches of a figure on horseback with a large basket on the left side and other panels contain a Chinoiserie pavilion. The "Angry Lion" pattern is considered rare. This version shows a large lion incongruously standing in an English landscape with a country house in the middle ground with extensive woods to either side. To the left, a figure on horseback with a large basket on their left side is riding up a steep path. Some variations of the pattern are wider and have small figures to the right.
