About the Item
Rare early pair of antique Mason's Ashworth Ironstone Chinoiserie pattern hand enameled and transfer decorated large dinner plates
19th Century
Vibrant, joyful colors of orange, mulberry, cobalt blue, green, yellow, pink and russet compose an artful paisley pattern border with floral elements, surrounding a central motif of Chinoiserie style Bird of Paradise perched on a twisted branch of oversize peony flowers. Each piece with finely hand enameled details on cobalt blue transfer decorated pattern. The hand painted raised enameling is slightly different on each plate and gives a distinctive hand crafted appearance. Each plate is marked on the back with a large elaborate Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom Warrant with the motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal y Pense" which translates to "Shamed be (the person) who thinks of evil" in the Anglo-Norman language used by the medival ruling class in England. This is also the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter, the highest of all British knighthoods. An underglaze blue crescent mark is also present which coinsides with Early Royal Worcester Dr. Wall period. It is possible that the ceramic forms are from that period. Blank forms were often purchased by succeeding potteries to be used as the value of the ceramic wares were quite substantial. This rare Ashworth pattern has an unusual Neo-Gothic border in cobalt blue surrounding the central mofit. Beautiful large scale display plates.
A set of 12 8.25 inch plates and a footed serving compote in the same pattern, from a later period is available for purchase- please contact for details.
Diameter of each plate: 10.5 inch
Marks: Royal warrant underglaze blue mark, underglazed blue cresent mark
Condition: Very Good, light surface wear to the enameling and to the backs commensurate with age.
