A Staffordshire pottery hen on a basket covered tureen, England, circa 1890 The hand painted hen sits on her eggs in a yellow ochre basket weave oval base. The hen shows a gray and black feathered body with black and gray striped wing tips and tail feathers. Her head is highlighted in black and brick red. She warms her eggs on a bed of green grass. Decorated in the round – she can be displayed from any angle. The interior of the base and lid are finished in white. 7.5 in. L x 5.5 in. W x 6.5 in. H Good antique condition, a teeny bite to the side of the tail, more felt than seen. A sliver of loss to the interior rim of the base, unseen when the hen is seated.
