About the Item

Large Staffordshire Pearlware Fox Hound Stirrup Cup, Circa 1820 This is a fine example of a Staffordshire pearlware stirrup cup from the early 19th century. Molded in the naturalistic form of a fox hound's head, the piece is skillfully hand-painted in shades of brown and white with subtle red spots, a black nose, and whiskers. The large, pendulous ears hang on either side, adding to the lifelike quality. The use of pearlware, a type of earthenware with a bluish-tinged glaze, was a popular choice for its durable and refined finish. Dimensions: 5 inches high x 6 inches long x 5.5 inches deep. Provenance: From the distinguished collection of Elinor Penna. Condition: One ear tip has an invisible professional repair, a testament to its preservation over two centuries. Reference: NY10794-prrx Historical Context Stirrup cups are a cherished tradition with a long history, particularly associated with the English practice of foxhunting. These unique, footless vessels were designed to be held in the hand and were traditionally filled with port or sherry and offered to mounted foxhunters as they prepared to set off on a hunt. The term "stirrup cup" refers to this act of toasting as the riders have one foot already in the stirrup. This ritual, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, connects to an even older tradition of offering "parting cups" to travelers at the start of a journey, as noted by Chaucer. This particular stirrup cup, depicting a fox hound, is a symbolic object deeply connected to the culture and rituals of foxhunting. The detailed modeling and painting reflect the high level of craftsmanship of the Staffordshire potteries, which dominated the English ceramics market during this period. Pearlware, a refined version of creamware developed by potters like Josiah Wedgwood, was a popular medium for such pieces due to its whiter body and brilliant, slightly bluish glaze, which enhanced the colors of the painted decoration. The existence of poems like Sidney Lanier's "The Stirrup Cup" from 1877 highlights how deeply ingrained this tradition was in both English and American culture. Beyond their practical use, these cups served as decorative objects, celebrating the sport and the animal at the heart of the hunt. This stirrup cup is not merely a drinking vessel but a piece of sporting history and folk art, representing a bygone era of rural traditions and refined country life. (Ref: NY10794-nncn)
