About the Item
A delightful and rare antique English Staffordshire transfer printed hand cooler egg portraying Prince Albert
the young Queen Victoria dates from around 1840.
This particular egg is made from pottery while more commonly these were made from glass, with many of the main French Glass makers, Baccarat, Clichy and St Louis all having made glass varieties. These were commonly carried by ladies inside their hand muffs to keep the hands cool.
Good examples of these are rare and this egg is printed with a scene of the young Prince Albert courting Queen Victoria and may even have been made to commemorate their marriage on 10 February 1840. The scene is printed in pink with a violet printed feather style floral sprig printed in violet to the opposite side. The egg is typically not marked.
