?Dümler
Breiden.
The factory started production in 1883 and was established in Höhr-Grenzhausen, a town renowned for its many ceramics factories. The founders were Peter Dümler (7/11/1860-19/04/1907) and his brother-in-law Albert Breiden (12/06/1860-27/05/1926).
Peter was designer and educated by Reinhold Hanke
Simon Peter Gerz. Albert, educated by his uncle S.P. Gerz was in charge of the concern. Peter died in 1907 and Albert took over the oncern with the help of Bertha, Peter’s widow. Paul Dümler, Peter’s son, followed the footsteps of his father and designed the Terra Sigillata series (this work was based on the style of the old Roman earthenware).
His career was very short however for he did not come back from the war. In 1918 a cousin named Ernst Dümler joined the concern and took his place. In 1913 Albert had sold his share in the concern. After WW I Albert managed the S.P. Gerz concern with the help of his two sons, Adolf and Hermann. Albert died in May 1926 at the age of 65 and Hermann was appointed manager of the S.P. Gerz concern.
From the start a lot of traditional earthenware was manufactured like beer jugs, punch bowls and mugs. After the war, during the so called ‘ceramics Boom’ of the 1950s and 1960s, the concern enjoyed a period of strong growth. From 1930 until the end of 1980 D
B was one of the leading ceramics factories. Production of beer jugs was largest between 1890 and the 1930s of the previous century. Beer jug production ceased in 1957. A series of special vases was designed to be recognized by the brand ‘RELIEF’ at the bottom.
By the end of the 60s a copper-colored glaze was developed, in which copper parts were processed.
This lends a brilliant effect when placed in light. The quality of most vases is supreme. Faulty vases were not in any circumstance allowed to leave the factory.
Dümler
Breiden were very successful but lagged behind on the industry leaders of those days: Ruscha and Scheurich. The concern closed its doors in 1995.
