About the Item

Victorian Majolica “Three-Legged Gentleman” Teapot Attributed to William Brownfield Sons, Cobridge, Staffordshire, ca. 1875–1885 A rare Victorian majolica teapot modeled as a comic urban gentleman, or “dandy,” seated astride a textured tree trunk, his upward-extended leg forming the spout and his gloved hand grasping the stylized handle. The figure wears a high Victorian top hat, a cobalt-glazed frock coat, a lavender cravat, and white trousers—an intentionally exaggerated rendition of the prosperous city gentleman familiar from music-hall caricature and Punch magazine illustration. The rich glaze palette, lively modeling, and whimsical “third-leg” conceit align with known majolica designs attributed to William Brownfield Sons. Comparable examples have appeared in major collections and at Heritage Auctions, where the pair is recognized as part of Brownfield’s character-based figural series.
