About the Item

A Flourish of Flora: Wedgwood's Botanical Creamware Plate, 1862 This elegant piece is a Wedgwood creamware plate from 1862, a stunning example of the enduring appeal of botanical illustration during the Victorian era. The Botanical Specimen Style The practice of depicting a single, scientifically accurate plant specimen was popular in English ceramics, reviving a style first established in the late 18th and early 19th centuries by companies like Spode and Worcester. These pieces were often part of larger dessert services where each plate featured a unique flower, giving the set a collectible, quasi-educational feel that resonated strongly with the Victorian public's passion for botany and flower collecting. The beautiful flower depicted is an Iris, with distinctive red-pink petals and a creamy-yellow center, complete with two open and two closed blossoms on their stems. While the exact Latin name remains elusive without a documented pattern name, the appearance suggests a variety of Dwarf Iris (Iris pumila or a related cultivar) or a specific hybrid that was favored by botanical illustrators of the time. Design and Technique The creamware body—an innovation pioneered by Josiah Wedgwood—provides a rich, warm canvas for the decoration. The central botanical image is a combination of transfer-printed outlines that establish the complex detail of the plant, which was then meticulously hand-colored in enamel paints to achieve the naturalistic effect. The border features a handsome printed design in brown, consisting of an outer band of repeating domes with a stylized leaf detail, and an inner wavy band. This rich, precise border contrasts beautifully with the softness of the creamware and the vibrant color of the Iris, creating a sophisticated frame typical of high-quality mid-Victorian decorative arts. Dimensions: 9 1/8 inch diameter x 1/2 inch height. Marks: The impressed mark on the reverse, WEDGWOOD U71P, is highly significant. The 'U' date code confirms the plate was manufactured in the year 1862. This places the piece squarely in the Aesthetic Movement (1860s-1890s), a period that championed "Art for Art's Sake" and highly decorative, naturalistic designs, which is perfectly reflected in the precise, specimen-style painting. The 'P' in the code may be a specific pattern identifier, while the single 'M' is likely a potter's or worker's mark. (Ref: NY10508-ll)
