About the Item

Etruria, Staffordshire, circa 1925, turned Wedgwood shape no. 317, stoneware with crimson Jasper dip ground, decorated with sprigged white Jasper bas-relief depictions of muses and Apollo, ringed lion's masks with grapevine festoons, the rim wreathed in flowers, impressed "WEDGWOOD/ENGLAND" at base, 7 x 8 in. Crimson Jasper, although modern compared to 18th century Jasper, remains the most desirable of all colors among collectors. Although some 18th century lilac firings resulted in a brilliant and rare mulberry, experimentation on crimson didn't begin until 1910. It ceased when the saturated hue failed to yield to the white sprigging atop, resulting in bleeding. Wedgwood leaders Harry Bernard and Burt Bentley reinitiated new experimentation with crimson in 1925, with production through 1932 (Robin Reilly, 1994). Etruria closed in 1938.
