About the Item

French Mid-Century Modern Aperitif / Hors d’Oeuvre set by Accolay, France, 1950s. Rare and sculptural French mid-century modern aperitif or serving set created by Accolay, France, circa 1950s. This ceramic set consists of four pieces, each hand-shaped and decorated in Accolay’s signature green, black, and yellow glaze, renowned for its bold, expressive character. The ensemble includes: 1 large dish: 15.75 × 8.15 × 3.15 in (40 × 20.7 × 8 cm) 1 medium dish: 12.6 × 6.5 × 3.15 in (32 × 16.5 × 8 cm) 1 small dish: 8.1 × 4.3 × 2.75 in (20.5 × 11 × 7 cm) 1 bowl: Diameter 5.1 in (13 cm); Height 3.35 in (8.5 cm) Each piece is marked “Accolay” on the underside, confirming authenticity. The vibrant glaze and organic forms are emblematic of Accolay’s postwar production, combining functionality with artistic freedom. Condition: Very good vintage condition with no cracks or repairs. Minor signs of age consistent with handcrafted ceramics of the period. A highly decorative and collectible set, perfect for serving, display, or as a centerpiece in a mid-century modern or ceramic-focused interior. About Accolay Accolay was a legendary French ceramic collective founded in 1945 in the village of Accolay, Burgundy, by four young artists: André Boutaud, Louis Dangon, Slavic Paley, and Raude. Trained in Cluny under ceramicist Alexandre Kostanda, they initially produced ceramic buttons and jewelry. Their breakthrough came when Christian Dior commissioned ceramic buttons and accessories for his first couture collections in 1945–1946. Following the success of these designs, widely published in fashion magazines, Accolay gained immediate recognition. By the late 1940s, the group shifted toward functional and decorative ceramics, including tableware, vases, serving pieces, sculptures, and later experimental works incorporating resin and lighting. In 1952, the arrival of Canadian painter and designer Rafael Giarousso marked the beginning of Accolay’s more playful, humorous, and expressive period. At its height, Accolay employed a large portion of the local population, with its ceramics sold extensively throughout France, particularly along the major travel routes to the South. Production continued successfully into the 1970s, before declining due to economic changes and shifting travel patterns. Following André Boutaud’s death in 1983, production gradually ended in 1989. Today, Accolay ceramics are highly sought after by collectors for their bold glazes, organic forms, and joyful postwar spirit, representing one of the most important French ceramic movements of the mid-20th century.
