About the Item
Antique 19th century Russian 84 silver and crystal tea glass holder
Makers Mark : Cyrillic EB
Of classical form, with fine, elegant silverwork along the upper border, with a prominent beautifully engraved central Pan Slavic design cartouche surrounded by intricate scrolled foliate and floral motifs. In most cases, the cartouche area bears the initials or presentation inscription of the original owner- it is rare to find an uninscribed antique example. This piece is hallmarked on the side and the base with the maker's mark of EB and the Russian 84 silver mark. Pan Slavic design is sought after by collectors of Russian silver for its unmistakeable originality. The Russian tea ceremony plays a large role in traditional Russian hospitality and the promotion of good health. The first thing a visitor to a Russian home would be offered was a glass of tea as a sign of welcome. When served in a beautifull vessel, the welcome is magnified.
