About the Item
A stylish art nouveau Tudric pewter jug or coffee pot molded with stylized mushroom designs by renowned designer Archibald Knox (British, 1864-1933) and dating from around 1904.
Many of these pieces were made and retailed through Liberty
Co, London with Knox being their primary designer. He was considered a leading figure of modern design and contributed to the success and recognition achieved by Liberty
Co during this period.
The jug is of tall almost cylindrical shape standing raised on two ski like feet with a flat woven rattan covered handle and with a hinged cover with thumb rest. The pot has a hand planished finish and retains a wonderful original patina. The pot appeared as part of a set in the Liberty catalogue for 1904 although most of the sets we have researched have had a polished finish. The jug is marked TUDRIC and numbered 0231. The jug also has a registration number dating it to 1904 and believe it may have been an early variant of the design which was later changed.
In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
