About the Item
A beautifully hand-painted porcelain plate from Paul Lefèvre, Limoges, dating to the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900). Inspired by the Rococo revival style of the period, the plate features a finely executed sepia pastoral scene (camaïeu bistre), depicting a peasant with a horse-drawn cart in a soft, romantic countryside setting. In the background, a distant hilltop tower completes the nostalgic atmosphere.
The central scene is surrounded by a richly decorated polychrome floral border with delicate hand-painted roses, scrollwork, and lattice motifs in blue, yellow, and gold, characteristic of the period’s fascination with 18th-century French faience aesthetics. The rim is finished with a gilded beaded edge, adding elegance and refinement.
🔹 Originally marked “Limoges P.L. France” (covered by red overglaze), the plate bears a later addition of the word “Marseille” – possibly added to emphasize its stylistic influence rather than true origin.
