About the Item

Striking serving set of tureen with lid and underplate features ceramic or porcelain body with faux bamboo decor, forming a strong geometric trim in Chinese Chippendale style. Warm, buttery yellow colors of the bamboo trellises with mocha brown accents are meticulously hand-painted with great detail; the faux bamboo trellis, done in relief, stands out on white background. The lid has an opening for the serving utensils. The tureen and the underplate are marked with "Made in Italy" on the bottoms; the pieces are missing the distributor stickers. The Chinese Chippendale style was popular in Italy in 1960s, and fine examples of Italian designs were produced by multiple companies, including the luxury furniture company Vivai Del Sud, which made both furniture and decor items, such as lamps, in this style. We're attributing the set to Mottahedeh, who sourced high quality Italian majolica in similar styles; the pieces will be simply marked ITALY or "Made in Italy" and Mottahedeh will add their paper stickers. As the pieces are quite old, the stickers often get lost or destroyed. The tureen with its classic shape, detailed decor, and historically inspired design will blend quite well with many china and serverware patterns, both in traditional and more modern styles. Overall, the piece is surprizingly reminiscent of the beautiful Vannerie Cottage pattern by Alberto Pinto, inspired by Jean-Michel Frank’s Bauhaus rattan furniture from the 1930s, the natural beauty of rattan, and its intricately woven patterns; however, it predates the Vannerie Cottage for half a century. The elegant, sculptural form, high quality craftsmanship, and traditional Chinoiserie style will make the set a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes, from Traditional to Eclectic, Transitional, Modern Country, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Palm Beach, Collected, or Contemporary.

Haviland Limoges Porcelain Fleurs Parisiennes Tureen, 1887-1889
By Haviland Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Antique hand painted and hand decorated small tureen by Haviland in the Fleurs Parisiennes pattern on Cannele blank measures 3.1" and 8.5" with 5.4" opening. The back-marks on the bottom are H&C*/Depose underglaze mark, dating back to 1887, and the circular Haviland Limoges decorator/overglaze mark (mark g, according to Haviland's Collectors International Foundation reference sheet) in brown (color indicates premium decor pieces on Haviland porcelain made in that period), dating back to 1879-1889. Cannele blank ("fluted"), influenced by traditional Japanese bowl shape called "kaki" or "chrysanthemum", was one of the new blanks created in 1880-1890s by Haviland's artists at the peak of Japonisme movement, after European artists and artisans become exposed to Japanese art. Cannele was hugely popular at the time and won the Grand Prix of 1889 Paris's World Fair. The Fleurs Parisiennes is one of the less common Haviland patterns...
