About the Item

Mid-Century French ceramic Condiment set by Albert Thiry, 1970s Circa 1970 With wooden spoons. 22cmx12cm 16.5cmx10.5cm 15cmx8.5cm ----------- Albert Thiry (1923-2009) Ceramist from Nice, he studied at the School of Decorative Arts in the city. He settled with his wife Pyot Gavaudan in 1943 in the pottery village of Vallauris. There he continued his training as a ceramist in various workshops, notably that of Charles Voltz (1923-1997). In 1956, he joined Claire and René Batigne as a decorator, who had run the Tapis Vert workshop since 1950. There he rubbed shoulders with Marcel Vertès and Anton Prinner who introduced him to sculpture. He set up on his own in 1962, joined by his wife, Pyot Gavaudan, who had been a designer and decorator at the Giraud workshop since 1956. Together they then produced two types of productions: one related to the decorative arts (tableware and lighting) and the other solely sculptural (dreamlike characters and animals). They perfected a technique of intaglio engraving and decoration in chamotte clay. From 1966 to 1974, Albert Thiry participated in the Biennales de Vallauris and received the honorary diploma in 1971.
