About the Item

A stunning and monumental Art Deco coupe or serving dish, a masterful work of design by Luc Lanel for the prestigious French house Christofle, circa 1933. This piece perfectly embodies the geometric elegance of the Art Deco era. The shallow, wide coupe features a beautifully polished, smooth surface, contrasting with the dramatic, hand-hammered texture of the sturdy base and foot. The most captivating feature is the stylized, segmented central column, a sculptural detail composed of four bold, spherical forms that lift the bowl with an air of sophisticated modernity. The highly reflective silvered metal finish catches the light, highlighting both the smooth and textured surfaces. Dimensions: D 35.5 cm / 13.98 inches, H 15 cm / 5.91 inches Weight: 2 kgs / 4.41 lbs Luc Lanel (1893-1965) was one of Christofle's most influential designers, known for his sleek, architectural designs that defined the period, including his celebrated work on the interiors and tableware of the transatlantic ocean liner S.S. Normandie. This coupe is an exceptional example of his work, blending functionality with high-level artistic design. The piece is authentically marked on the underside of the foot, showcasing the Christofle hallmarks and the number 40, this number typically indicates the amount of silver in grams used in the plating process for a dozen pieces of cutlery or a large piece of tableware like this. The number 40 represents a heavy, high-quality silver plate, indicating durability and luxury. The first maker's mark Christofle was registered with the Garantie de Paris in 1832. It was a rifle bayonet and the letters CC. In 1853, the new hallmark registered by the Maison was sesigned with a bee hovering under 3 stars framed by the two Cs that stood for Christofle Cie. The two Cs would later be replaced by "OC" meaning "Orfèvrerie Christofle". The balance stamp, the silversmith's hallmark, was used by Maison Christofle from 1844 to 1935. Since 1935, the manufacturer's mark has been represented by an illustration of the knight from Chess surrounded by the initials "OC".
