Vintage Rare Silver Plated Roast Beef Trolley

This is magnificent and rare, vintage Kaymet silver plate and mahogany serving trolley with revolving dome, dating from the second quarter of the 20th Century.It is one of the most desirable models that they made, with the revolving dome which makes it very easy to use. This stunning trolley is suitable for serving cooked meats such as roast beef, lamb and turkey. It features a vented silver plated locking retractable revolving dome which opens to a detachable well and water tank over three spirit burners. The water tank has two recesses for containers for gravy or vegetables, as well as a wooden carving board. It has a vented screw knob for filling the tank with water and for vapor or steam to escape. The sides are fitted with handles and a detachable plate holder, and it has an oval silver plated utensil tray. It is set upon a mahogany turned leg base with two shelves and stands on four rubberized castors. This superb piece was crafted by perhaps the finest silversmith of the time. Serve your roast beef in style! Kaymet was established in 1947. In the 1940s Sydney Schreiber had a small metalworking business which was helping the war effort by manufacturing boxes for radar equipment. After the war he needed to find a different use for his machinery. He changed the company name to Kaymet in 1947 and began making trolleys and trays for the catering business and he exhibited these at the Festival of Britain in 1951. One of their premium products was the Kaymet Roast Beef trolley which was purchased by the leading hotels at that time. Mahogany is probably one of the largest families of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress Mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual Mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Cuban Mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct.

This is an exquisite and rare antique pair of English silver plated on copper entree dishes stamped Walker & Hall Sheffield Plate Old Style, and dated Circa 1860.
