About the Item
Late 19th/Early 20th C., English, a beautifully crafted antique cutlery set, likely intended for dessert or formal dining. The set consists of 12 knives and 12 forks stamped "TE
Co.", in a wooden presentation case.
The set consists of matching forks and knives, each piece featuring a handle made of mother of pearl. The iridescent quality of the mother of pearl adds a luxurious and refined touch to the cutlery. The handles are smooth, with the mother of pearl displaying a natural luster and opalescence. The handles are joined to the metal parts with decorative ferrules. The forks and knives have intricately decorated sections just above the mother of pearl handles. These sections, often featuring detailed floral or scroll motifs, are typical of high-quality silverware from the Victorian or Edwardian eras.
The knife blades are slim, with a slightly curved edge, and the forks have long, elegant tines. The cutlery set is housed in a rectangular wooden box, made of oak with a brass cartouche. The wood is finely polished, indicating careful craftsmanship. The inside of the case is lined with a rich, deep purple velvet. The case is designed to securely hold the cutlery in place, with specific slots for each fork and knife, ensuring they do not move or get damaged when the case is closed.
This type of cutlery set was commonly used in formal dining settings during the late 19th to early 20th centuries, particularly in Victorian or Edwardian households. The use of mother of pearl handles and intricate silver detailing indicates that this set was intended for special occasions or as a display of wealth and sophistication.
