Crafted from silver plate, these asparagus tongs date to the late 19th century. Asparagus tongs first appeared in 18th century Europe and became especially popular in the 19th century as specialised silver serving implements, reflecting the era’s fascination with elegant table rituals and highly specific dining tools. Their use highlights asparagus’s status as a prized, seasonal delicacy associated with refinement and upper-class dining; in this period, asparagus symbolised culinary sophistication and social standing, making the implements designed for it markers of etiquette and luxury.
These particular tongs follow the typical U-shaped form introduced in the 1830s and are adorned with engraved decorative motifs, including a framed dotted pattern on the handle. The rectangular tong ends are made broader to prevent asparagus spears from breaking when lifted. They also feature a blank cartouche, most likely intended for the owner’s monogram, a popular custom at the time.
Both functional and decorative, these asparagus tongs make a fascinating addition to the dinner table and can be used not only for serving asparagus but also for presenting other foods in modern homes.
