About the Item

This is an intricate, extremely attractive and exquisitely made antique Victorian silver plated centrepiece by the renowned silversmith, Horace Woodward and Co., Birmingham, 1876 in date. This stunning centrepiece has a central oval silver plated diah dish which is removable and is profusely decorated with a stunning reed and ribbon rim throughout, which is further embellished with shaped floral motifs. It is highly decorative and at the same time very functional, making it ideal for displaying fruit and sweets. The oval dish fits into the oval centrepiece which is distinctively decorated with urns, garlands and floral motifs and it is raised on four distinguished tall legs in the form of square columns. This magnificent silver-plated centrepiece features an extraordinary stepped base in the form of a novelty cross, also beautifully chased with foliate decoration to the edge. It bears the makers' mark HW Co for Horace Woodward and Co, the registration number 7453 as well as the diamond registration symbol indicating this item was made on 29th March 1876. A lot of intricate detailing has gone into the creation of this beautiful item which is an extremely well designed and attractive centrepiece that can only grow in value. Condition: In excellent condition with clear makers marks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation. Birmingham The firm was established in mid-19th century by George Cartwright and Joseph Hirons under the style Cartwright Hirons. In 1853 they were joined by Horace Woodward and the style changed to Cartwright, Hirons Woodward. In 1859 the firm became Cartwright Woodward and in 1865 the business was continued by Horace Woodward under the style Horace Woodward Co. In 1893 the firm was converted into a limited liability company under the style Horace Woodward Co Ltd. The firm used a figural trade mark (the shape of Atlas into a lozenge) registered in 1876. The company was acquired by Adie Brothers Ltd in 1919.

Antique silver plated coffee and tea set by Elkington & Co made in the United Kingdom in the 1880s. Elkington & Co are one of the most important names in English Silver and Silver Plate. Elkington started in Birmingham in 1836, and experimented with innovative gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another. By 1840 production was already underway with silver electroplated wares. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 (renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1861) and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success. Elkington held Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI. This is a highly decorative antique Victorian silver plated folding biscuit box, the base bearing the makers' mark of the renowned silversmiths Fenton Brothers of Sheffield, England, circa 1890 in date and bearing the Staniforth's Patent mark as well as the registration number 3549. It has a beautifully shaped body sitting in a cast frame with remarkably chased branch supports and the original interior features elegant hand-pierced dividers.
