About the Item
A Pair of Antique Sheffield Covered Vegetable Dishes, c1810. Two piece antique Sheffield plated vegetable dishes with cover with removable handle. The twist off handle on the cover allows it to be used as another serving dish. With gadrooned, beaded and scalloped edges. The handle and finial with rocille decoration. Old Sheffield Plate, or fused plate, is a technique invented in Sheffield in 1743 by cutler Thomas Boulsover. This method involved fusing a thin sheet of silver onto an ingot of copper, then rolling the composite metal into thin sheets that could be worked into finished products. Early manufacturers would fold the edges of the metal or apply a U-shaped silver wire to conceal the copper core. The base and finials are numbered the same.
