George III Style Pair of English Round Meat Plate Covers in Silver Plated
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Exceptional pair of round domed English lids for meat dishes in Georgian style; on the lower edge they have two rows of decoration, one elegantly knurled with flower and leaf motifs, the other with a classic, bold podding; the domes are topped with massive cast handles embellished with enchanting and sumptuous decoration; the handles are connected to the domes with a screw, thus removable. They were produced between 1840 and 1850 in an artisan workshop in London; at that time galvanic silver-plating was supplanting the Old Sheffield Plate, in fact for our lids the artisans used, always copper as the base metal, but the electrolytic method was used for the silver-plating; the silver-plating of those times was thick and has allowed objects to arrive to the present day (after more than 180 years) in excellent condition. These kinds of artifacts were mainly used to cover game dishes, with the dual function first to enhance the importance of the food by covering it with a precious object and second to retain the heat of the food. When Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837, she began a reform of family life that continued throughout the 63 years of her reign. The food served on dining tables also changed, and the way it was presented also changed. There was talk of "setting the table," and Victorian ladies had to be able to do it successfully. Dining like a Victorian meant setting an elegant table complete with fine serving pieces. Guests ate their meals in a well-appointed dining room with an incredible array of porcelain and silver serving dishes overflowing with delicacies. And, of course, all kinds of game were presented with silver or silver-plated domes; large oval domes were the most common, used precisely for hearty courses of roasts; round ones (like our pair) were more refined and were used for particularly elaborate and original entrees and meals. A food dome immediately lends a casual elegance to the table and ensures a dinner served...
