About the Item
Sweet Pairpoint Manufacturing Co. Baby or Christening Cup, Engraved “Tom 1899”
This charming little cup by Pairpoint Manufacturing Co. dates to around 1899 and was likely given to celebrate the birth or christening of a baby boy named Tom. It’s such a sweet piece of history, over 125 years old, and beautifully detailed. The handle has an elegant acanthus leaf motif, while ribbons, roses, and daisies wrap around the body in soft relief. Opposite the handle, it’s engraved “Tom 1899.”
The underside is stamped Pairpoint MFG. Co. / Quadruple Plate / 469. The cup shows gentle age and use, with some oxidation and staining inside, but overall it has wonderful character and that rich patina only time creates.
Baby cups like this were cherished keepsakes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both practical and sentimental. Families often had them engraved as heirlooms, and they’ve become collectible for their personal charm and craftsmanship. Pairpoint is one of the most beloved American makers of this period, known for their elegant silver-plated work.
Collectors of Victorian and early American silver also seek out examples by Gorham, Tiffany
Co., Reed
Barton, Wallace, and International Silver Co., but there’s something especially endearing about Pairpoint’s romantic designs.
