About the Item
An antique French Régence-style silver-plated hot water or tea urn (samovar), retaining its original mahogany fittings and alcohol burner, produced by the renowned silversmith Tétard Frères, circa 1900.
At the turn of the 20th century, it was customary for both French and English silversmiths to complement solid silver tea or coffee services with a matching silver-plated hot water urn. Solid silver, being a relatively soft metal, is prone to warping or denting under the weight of several liters of water, particularly when heated. Silver plate, typically applied over a stronger base metal such as copper or nickel silver, offered greater structural stability and resistance to heat, making it far better suited for the functional demands of an urn.
