About the Item
This ornament is the 1978 release in the long-running annual sterling Christmas medallion collection by Wallace Silversmiths, one of the most respected American silver manufacturers. The 1978 edition carries a beautifully rendered design of doves in flight, along with a peace-themed inscription — a classic, meaningful motif well-suited to holiday symbolism.
Design Description — Ornament Front
The ornament is crafted in solid sterling silver and shaped into a vertically oriented openwork oval medallion. Its design balances detailed sculptural relief with a clean, polished frame.
• Twin Doves in High Detail
Inside the open oval frame are two doves, depicted in mid-flight. Their wings are outstretched, overlapping slightly, giving a sense of movement and harmony.
The birds are executed in a deeply textured relief, with finely carved feathers and expressive faces. This three-dimensional sculpting is a hallmark of Wallace’s craftsmanship in this series.
• Peace Inscription Along the Border
The smooth outer rim encircling the doves bears a meaningful, flowing inscription:
“Peace on Earth 1978 Good Will Toward Men”
The lettering is engraved in an elegant, slightly whimsical font, adding a hand-crafted feel to the ornament.
• Sterling Marking
At the bottom edge of the design, stamped beneath the doves, is:
“WALLACE STERLING”
This confirms authenticity and material purity.
• Integrated Hanging Loop
A sturdy sterling loop is soldered at the top for hanging or ribbon attachment.
Packaging — Shown in Second Photo
The accompanying box, visible in the second image, is the original Wallace presentation box for the 1978 edition. It includes:
• Title Insert Card
A printed card reading:
“Annual Edition – Eighth in a Series
1978 Sterling Medallion
by Wallace Silversmiths”
A small dove illustration appears at the top, matching the theme of the ornament.
The classic red lettering on a white background reflects Wallace’s elegant packaging style of the 1970s.
• Protective Interior
The box includes its original fitted insert to cradle and display the ornament securely.
Overall Impression
The 1978 Wallace Sterling Christmas Medallion is a beautifully designed collectible featuring:
A pair of doves, symbolizing peace and hope
A meaningful holiday inscription
High-relief sculptural artistry
An elegant open-oval silhouette
Original Wallace packaging and insert
This edition remains one of the more sought-after pieces from Wallace’s early annual medallion years due to its strong symbolic imagery and exceptional detail.

Towle Silversmiths Sterling Silver Christmas Ornament – 1978
By Towle Silversmiths
Located in Brooklyn, NY
This beautifully crafted 1978 sterling silver Christmas ornament by Towle Silversmiths showcases the company’s exceptional skill in fine metal engraving and ornamental design. Known for their collectible annual holiday series, Towle produced this piece with a level of artistry and intricacy that reflects their long-standing reputation as one of America’s premier silversmithing firms.
Design – Front Side
The front of the ornament features an elaborate circular medallion richly decorated with a symmetrical pattern inspired by traditional decorative arts. The design is composed of eight repeating panels, each containing engraved imagery that resembles classical architectural or symbolic motifs—possibly stylized towers, lanterns, or heraldic forms. These elements are framed within scalloped cartouches, creating a balanced and rhythmic layout that radiates outward from the center.
At the very heart of the ornament is a small, detailed rosette surrounded by ornamental scrollwork, lending the piece a refined, almost mandala-like quality. The high-relief engravings and polished finish give the front surface depth and dimension, allowing light to play across its curves and decorative contours.
Reverse Side
The reverse side presents a softer, more organic design: an engraved spray of flowers, with long, graceful stems rising upward and bursting into circular, textured blossoms. Towle’s engravers used a combination of smooth incised lines and dotted stippling to create contrast and visual texture, giving the floral design an elegant, hand-crafted appearance.
Along the lower edge, the ornament is inscribed:
“Towle Sterling © 1978”
This hallmark confirms both the year of production and the ornament’s solid sterling silver composition.
Craftsmanship
Style
This 1978 Towle ornament beautifully juxtaposes two artistic themes: the structured geometry of the front design and the natural, flowing beauty of the floral engraving on the back. The result is a versatile ornament that can be displayed on either side, each offering its own aesthetic appeal.
Collectibility
As part of Towle’s late-1970s line of annual sterling silver ornaments, the 1978 design is highly collectible. Its intricate engraving, polished finish, and dual-sided artistry make it a standout addition for collectors of vintage sterling Christmas ornaments...
