About the Item

This refined French Empire period coffee pot, or ewer, dates from the early years of the 19th-century and is crafted in solid silver. The elegant silhouette, balanced proportions and restrained classical ornamentation are characteristic of the Empire aesthetic, inspired by Antiquity and promoted during the Napoleonic era. The body rests on three slender claw feet, each applied with a finely chased palmette motif centered by a classical female mask. The sculptural spout is modeled as a stylized bird’s head, lending the piece a strong architectural presence, while the handle is made of darkened wood, providing a striking visual contrast with the silver and reflecting period practice. The hinged lid is topped with a finely worked finial, and the neck and lid are enriched with delicately engraved borders and beaded detailing. The silver is stamped with French hallmarks consistent with 19th century solid silver, including the Minerva head guarantee mark, as well as the maker’s initials J.B., identifying the silversmith. The piece weighs approximately 524 grams. The surface presents a soft, luminous patina with visible signs of age and use. An indentation to the body is clearly visible in the photographs; it does not affect the structural integrity of the piece and remains consistent with the history and life of an authentic Empire-period silver object. Overall, this coffee pot retains strong presence and decorative appeal, making it a compelling addition to a serious collection of French silver.
