About the Item
Lamp with stem in solid sterling silver embossed and chiseled completely by hand with a torchon motif.
The hat was made in Venice on the island of Murano with the "Murrina" technique
The Murrina glasses of the hat were joined with hand-shaped tin threads and subsequently silvered
The term "Murrino" was coined in Modern Times in 1878 by the abbot Vincenzo Zanetti.
Zanetti adopted this term to define mosaic glass vases and bowls that the Romans made using sections of cane that had abstract or even figurative designs such as faces, flowers and animals inside them, along their entire length.
The Alexandrian glassmakers mainly devoted themselves to the murrino glass technique. In 61 BC Pompey brought to Rome some murra vases which were exhibited in the temple of Jupiter. These vases, composed of a variety of fluorite, had the characteristic of emitting a particular odor, perhaps due to the resins used as a Binder during processing or more likely because they were used to contain perfumes, so the term murrha would be connected to myrra = myrrh , perfume. In the 1st century A. C. the Romans began to produce glass vases that reproduced the vases brought by Pompey. During the Middle Ages the technique for the production of murrino glass was lost. In the sixteenth century the Venetian glass masters made products that imitated the Roman murrini (pseudomurrini glass). The technique was then resumed towards the end of the 19th century at the Salviati glassworks by Vincenzo Moretti. Since then, the term murrino has remained and serves to identify both the individual cane sections and the object obtained from their composition.
Italian silverware, already with a centuries-old tradition, had a great development in the twentieth century and produced pieces of the highest quality that the whole world envies. Italian craftsmanship had a kind of new Renaissance after the war.
A great many high-quality silverware was born where exceptional pieces were produced that now decorate the most prestigious houses.
