This fine cutlery set was crafted in the early 20th century by the Birmingham-based maker William Hair Haseler. Haseler was a prominent silversmith who established W.H. Haseler
Co. in the late 19th century, becoming renowned for producing high-quality silver and metalwork. In 1898, the firm entered a celebrated partnership with Liberty
Co., creating the iconic ‘Cymric’ silver and ‘Tudric’ pewter lines, many of which were designed by leading Arts
Crafts figures, such as Archibald Knox. Blending Arts
Crafts ideals with the emerging Art Nouveau style, Haseler’s workshop produced jewellery, tableware, and decorative objects of exceptional craftsmanship. Today, silver bearing the W.H.H. mark is highly valued for its artistic significance and its important role in Liberty’s early 20th century design legacy.
This set comprises five forks and five knives, most likely intended as fruit cutlery. Crafted from sterling silver, the forks feature two prongs of slightly varying size, while the knives display a slender, elegant form with restrained decorative detail. The forks are hallmarked with Haseler’s maker’s mark, along with the Birmingham and England assay marks and the date letter ‘Z’ for 1924.
Celebrating the finest traditions of English silversmithing, this cutlery set would make a refined and elegant addition to any table setting.
