An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George III English cowrie shell and sterling silver vinaigrette; an addition to our collection of desirable antiques.
This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver vinaigrette has an oval form.
The body of the box is comprised with an impressive natural cowrie shell, embellished with a plain silver mount.
The mount of this cowrie shell vinaigrette is fitted with a hinged plain sterling silver cover incorporating a plain thumbpiece, opening to allow access to the hinged pierced decorated gilt grille.
The pierced decorated hinged grille is embellished with engraved decoration.
The interior of this Georgian vinaigrette and grille retains the original gilding.
Such small and desirable examples are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
This antique cowrie shell vinaigrette with silver can be displayed as a decorative object, placed within a cabinet of curiosities or enjoyed as a distinctive conversation piece on a dressing table or desk.
Traditionally these boxes would be used to hold scented sponges infused with aromatic oils or perfumes, vinaigrettes offered a refreshing fragrance when opened.
Condition
This antique George III vinaigrette is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition.
Full hallmarks struck to the interior of the vinaigrette are very clear.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine example of antique boxes.
