About the Item

A delightful antique Georgian era sterling silver mug or tankard. It has an engraved design to the upper half and lower half with a smooth finish on the mid section, to the front there is an engraved heraldic crest written in Latin featuring three men a knight and a bird with the text Vincere est Vivere which roughly translates to: To live is to conquer. This was the motto of Captain John Smith who was the governor of Virginia in the early 17th century, it is thought to symbolise living life to it's fullest, that merely living is a victory and the overcoming of obstacles. It has a squared scrolling handle, a half pint mug. It is made from solid sterling silver and is hallmarked to the body for sterling silver London assay mark, 1801, makers mark worn, bust of King George. A Beautiful piece for the collector. Condition: Good used condition overall with signs of use and wear commensurate with age, some light surface wear / scratches.
