About the Item

A fine antique Wedding beaker or cup. In solid silver with a gilt interior. Most likely given as a wedding gift or made to memorialize a marriage. The base of the cup comprising a mid-17th century medal by Dutch medallist Pieter van Abeele. The medal depicts Juno the goddess of marriage and childbirth accompanied by 2 peacocks (her sacred animal). She is seated in a sea of clouds on a throne with a crown on her head, a scepter in the left hand, a key in the the right hand (though the key is not a symbol of Juno, Juno was often associated with Janus, the god of beginning, in the realm of childbirth. Roman custom had the woman hold a key in her hand during childbirth while invoking Juno Lucina for safe delivery). The hidden side should depict a crowned image of Fidelity or Love. The inscription around the edge of the medal reads in Dutch: Ik Kroon Oprechte Liefd Altoos Met Mynen Trouring Eindeloos, which translates as "I Crown Sincere Love Always With My Endless Consolation". The cup itself with an engraved leaf border around the rim, a monogram to one side, and a armorial or family crest to the other. Simply a wonderful antique silver cup! Reference: see Harvard Art Museum's object 2021.134 Date: The medal to Mid-17th Century. The cup likely 17th or 18th Century.
