About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver butter shells/dishes made by John Emes; an addition to our dining silverware collection These exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver dishes have a plain scallop shell shaped form. Each dish bears a plain applied elevated handpiece comprised of what would be the umbo of the natural shell. These antique silver dishes are supported by three cast silver nautilus style shell feet. These exceptional pieces of antique London silverware were crafted by the renowned silversmith John Emes. Such period examples are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition These antique John Emes silver butter shells are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each dish are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of Georgian silverware.
