About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique George V English cast sterling silver card/menu holders; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. These exceptional George V cast sterling silver menu holders have been realistically modelled in the form of the classic 17th century puppet characters Punch and Judy. Each cast silver figure is embellished with details reproducing the characters period attire and anatomical features; the Judy character is holding their baby in her arms. These exceptional examples of antique silver are fitted with plain circular supports to the posterior surfaces. Each character surmounts a plain hallmarked circular plateaued base. These exceptional examples of antique silver are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire. Mr Pulcinella Punch and his wife Judy re-enact comical classic tales incorporating a wide range of 'guest' characters; many of these characters fall victim to the violent nature of Mr Punch's club. The enacted story typically involves Punch behaving foolishly, struggling with his wife Judy and the baby, all triumphant over the law whilst incorporating classic jokes and songs. Condition These antique sterling silver place card holders are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The cast decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each base are all very clear. Dimensions Height 4.8cm/1.9" Diameter of base 3.5cm/1.4" Weight 2.2 troy ounces/68.7g Maker: Horace Woodward Co Date: 1910 Origin: Birmingham, England Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request.
