A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver swing handled basket by James Dixon
Sons Ltd; part of our ornamental silverware collection.
This antique Victorian sterling silver basket has a rectangular rounded form onto four ball feet.
The sides of this basket are embellished with pierced fluted decoration.
The rim of the basket is ornamented with a Fine embossed opposing scroll and leaf decorated border accented with a shell motif to each corner.
This antique silver basket is fitted with a Fine hallmarked, chased and pierced decorated swing handle embellished with opposing scroll and leaf decoration accented with three floral motifs.
The well of this Victorian basket is plain and unembellished.
This impressive basket retains its original gilt interior.
Condition
This antique sterling silver basket is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. The engraved decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the basket and part hallmarks struck to the handle are all very clear.

A very good large silver swing handle basket of pierced oval form. The arched swing handle with two cast female busts arising from a leaf capped double C-scroll support. The cast and applied rim of shaped foliate and floral entwined decoration. The central bowl of the basket engraved with a rocaille cartouche containing an armorial. The top of the handle is decorated with a leaf form cartouche within which is the crest of a deer. The sides of the raised basket with hand cut pierced decoration. The whole standing on four cast and applied legs, decorated with a beautiful scrolling foliate design rising to high relief female faces, on leaf-form pad feet.
Hallmarked to the underside for London 1747 by Edward Aldridge. The underside of the handle bears the lion passant and maker’s mark, both struck twice.
