About the Item

A impressive Antique William IV Solid Silver Wager Cup in the style of the original 15th century German Marriage Cups originally created to be used at weddings to allow the bride and groom to share the same cup without spilling. This particularly fine example is of notably heavy weight and is finely crafted. The main body of the cup is formed in the shape of a woman in Elizabethan dress raising two oak branches above her head to support the cup above her head. The wide skirt forming the larger of the cups is embellished with delicate leaf and scroll patterns mirrored on the smaller cup. The cup has an engraving on the base saying - This Cup Presented by Sir Windham Ansthruther to be run for the Bigger or upperward of Lanarkshire Coursing Club was won by Captn Paterson's Dog Hubert 14th January 1833 (Hamlet. Fecit. Goldsmith to the King London) Made in London, England in 1832 by William Elliot, Approx. Weight - 914g / 29.4oz Approx. Height - 31.2cm Approx. Width 13.4cm Approx.
