About the Item
A charming and thoughtfully engineered traveling Hanukkah lamp in sterling silver, created in the United States in the early 20th century, incorporating elements dating to the late 19th century. Designed with portability and practicality in mind, this compact lamp exemplifies the ingenuity of Jewish ceremonial objects adapted for life on the move, while retaining a refined decorative character rooted in the Arts
Crafts aesthetic.
The lamp stands on two hinged bracket-form legs, which swing outward to provide stability during use and fold flat against the body for ease of transport. This clever folding mechanism underscores the lamp’s intended function as a traveling object, allowing it to be packed securely and efficiently.
The main body, which serves both as a large oil reservoir and storage compartment, is oval-rectangular in form and decorated on its exterior with C-scroll and foliate motifs, arranged in two orderly horizontal bands that encircle the walls. These restrained yet elegant designs reflect the Arts
Crafts emphasis on craftsmanship, balance, and surface integrity.
Notably, this central reservoir section was originally created for a different purpose, possibly as a small decorative box or snuff box, and was later ingeniously adapted into a Hanukkah lamp. This earlier origin is attested by an engraved inscription on one of the long sides bearing the initials “M. A.” and the date “1896,” linking the piece directly to its 19th-century history and to one of its early owners.
The upper section of the lamp, as well as the hinged legs below, were fashioned at a later date to transform the object into a fully functional Hanukkah lamp. The top features eight protruding wick spouts, arranged in a straight line, and is fitted with two applied handles, one at each end, facilitating opening and handling. The lid opens smoothly to allow for the filling of oil and closes securely for use or travel.
Applied to one side is the servant lamp (shamash), also a later addition, mounted on an L-shaped rising stem that elevates the candleholder above the main row of lights in accordance with halakhic tradition. When not in use, the servant lamp fits neatly and securely inside the main compartment, an especially thoughtful feature for travel and storage.
This traveling Hanukkah lamp is both endearing in scale and sophisticated in conception, embodying layers of history through its reused 19th-century component and its early 20th-century adaptation. It stands as a rare and evocative example of functional Judaica, reflecting personal devotion, craftsmanship, and the lived realities of Jewish life in motion.
Hallmarked at the bottom of the Hanukkah lamp.
