About the Item
Black, Starr
Frost sterling silver compote tazza or footed bowl, from the late 19th or early 20th century, in Art Nouveau style, with a pierced rim showcasing putti and stylized natural motifs. It measures 11 1/4'' in diameter (5 3/4'' excluding the rim) by 4'' in height, weighs 29.3 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks and a monogram as shown.
The oldest continuously operating jewelry firm in the United States, Black, Starr
Frost also produced objects in silver. Already in 1860, the company received an order for more than $12,000 of jewelry and silverware from Edward, Prince of Wales. In 1929, Black, Starr
Frost merged with Gorham Corporation, and was renamed Black, Starr, Frost-Gorham. Some of their pieces are present in the permanent collection of the New York Historical Society.
