About the Item

Charming 20th Century International Sterling Baby or Christening Cup, Engraved “DWE” This lovely sterling silver baby or christening cup by International Silver Co. has a timeless simplicity that makes it especially endearing. The form is clean and modern, with straight lines softened by just a touch of detail, a gently raised lip at the rim and subtle edging along the handle. Opposite the handle, the cup is engraved “DWE” in neat block letters, giving it that personal, heirloom touch. The interior retains a faint golden tone, adding warmth to the cool silver surface. The underside of the handle is stamped International Silver K76. The cup shows gentle wear consistent with age, gentle indentations, areas of light oxidation, and a slightly convex base (a charming design detail rather than damage). Altogether, it has a lovely, honest patina that speaks to its history. Sterling baby cups like this were cherished gifts throughout the 20th century, often presented at a christening or birth and engraved with the child’s initials. They were a symbol of love, prosperity, and tradition, meant to be treasured for generations. International Silver Co. was among the most respected American silversmiths of the early to mid-20th century, known for producing beautifully made sterling pieces with understated elegance. Collectors also seek comparable examples by Gorham, Reed Barton, Wallace, and Towle, each bringing their own character to this enduring tradition of silver baby cups.
