Hallmarked in London in 1878 by Elkington
Co., this stunning, Aesthetic period, Victorian, Antique Sterling Silver Batchelor Tea Set
Tray, is wonderfully engraved throughout with naturalistic engraving, and each piece carries an engraved crest. The design of the set is attributed to Dr. Christopher Dresser. The tray measures 13"(33cm) wide. The teapot measures 4.5"(12cm) tall, by 5"(12.5cm) from handle to spout and the other pieces are in proportion. The tea set and tray together weigh 46 troy ounces.
The attribution of the design being that of Dr Christopher Dresser is based on sketches in the Ipswich sketchbook of an identical shaped sugar bowl, and also the same shape of tea set being seen in the Dresser Exhibition book curated by Lyons and Morley, albeit without engraving. None of the designs by Dresser that were produced by Elkington are signed, and it is hard to research pattern numbers as entries were altered and re-dated during the beginning of the 1880s, however the attribution seems likely in this case.
