About the Item

An extraordinary example of early 19th-century Spanish silver craftsmanship, this sumptuously decorated atril (Bible/book stand) is attributed to the renowned silversmith Joseph Espejo of Cordoba. Dated 1804. Exquisite Craftsmanship Design Masterfully hand-chased and repoussé with elegant floral garlands, scrolling acanthus leaves, and medallions. Raised on ornately cast figural feet, each adorned with intricate sculptural female figure details. A grand, architectural form with a gracefully curved façade and a slanted reading surface, designed to hold a large Bible or manuscript. Original wood-lined interior, reinforcing its period authenticity. Hallmarks Authentication Stamped with Joseph Espejo’s maker’s mark and assay markings confirming its prestigious Cordoban origin. Espejo was one of Spain’s most distinguished silversmiths of the 18th and early 19th century, known for his work on religious and aristocratic commissions. Historical Significance Spanish silver of this scale and refinement is exceptionally rare, particularly in such well-preserved condition. Likely created for an ecclesiastical setting or a noble patron, this atril exemplifies the grandeur and opulence of Spain’s Baroque and Rococo traditions. A Museum-Quality Collectible Whether for a serious collector, an ecclesiastical institution, or a connoisseur of fine silver, this one-of-a-kind piece stands as a testament to Spain’s rich silversmithing heritage.
