Elaborate figural Egyptian Revival Victorian biscuit jar made by Mappin & Webb during the 19th century. This highly stylized piece features a winged sphinx with an Egyptian head piece finial. The piece is heavily engraved and has 4 four plaques that can be personalized. The bottom edge interior and outer edge is beaded and it stands on four stylized claw feet. The bottom is stamped with an early Mappin & Webb hallmark along with W 16 and some etched handwritten numbers as well. A truly spectacular piece that would be a wonderful addition to your home. The body of the mustard pot is encircled with impressive chased shaped-bead designs, each accented with opposing scrolling borders and matte backgrounds; this is a highly desirable design. The decoration to the body includes impressive bands of bead decoration to the upper and lower portions, in addition to applied, moulded borders. This fine Victorian silver mustard pot retains the original hallmarked hinged cover surmounted with an impressive cast silver pierced decorated lobed thumbpiece. The surface of the cover is encircled with further chased bead design, composing a central vacant shaped cartouche to the upper plateau. The body of the mustard pot is embellished with pierced decorated conjoined scrolling designs, accented with four chased decorated masks anchoring pensile drop fruiting arrangements. The upper and lower rims of this mustard pot are ornamented with applied, moulded thread decorated borders. This fine Victorian silver mustard pot retains the original hallmarked hinged cover surmounted with an impressive cast silver finial and leaf decorated thumbpiece. The surface of the cover is encircled with further chased decorated fruiting arrangements on a matte background, and incorporates a scroll bordered vacant shaped cartouche to either side.
