Egyptian Silver and Niello Enamel Scarab Motif Pill Box, Mid-20th Century
This finely crafted Egyptian silver pillboxexemplifies the enduring fascination with pharaonic revival design that flourished in the early to mid-20th century. Circular in form with a fitted lid, the box is richly decorated with a bold scarab beetle motif in polished relief against a field of deep black niello enamel, the composition encircled by a twisted ropework border. The contrast of dark niello with bright silver enhances the sculptural quality of the scarab, which was one of the most potent symbols of rebirth, renewal, and divine protection in Ancient Egypt.
The underside bears Egyptian assay marks, including the silver fineness “90” (900/1000 purity) and the lotus blossom symbol used by Cairo and Alexandria assay offices during the 20th century. These hallmarks firmly identify the piece as Egyptian silver, most likely produced between the 1930s and 1960s, a period when scarab and other pharaonic motifs enjoyed popularity with both local patrons and international visitors to Egypt.
Measuring 1.5 inches in diameter and 0.75 inches high (36 grams), the box would originally have been intended for snuff, pills, or small keepsakes. Today it stands as a collectible object, uniting ancient symbolism with the refined artistry of niello silverwork.
