About the Item

Fine Hand Wrought Antique American Arthur Stone Sterling Silver Cinquefoil Form Footed Bowl Early 20th Century Arthur Stone (1847-1938) is widely known as the Dean of American Silversmiths. He established his own shop in 1901 in South Gardner, MA in a barn next to his own home at 17 Winter Street. At first, he worked as an independent craftsman, taking on commissions he was able to complete entirely on his own. As his reputation as a silversmith grew, he hired craftsmen to work alongside him- in the next 25 years, he had as many as 12 working for him, eight of whom were master silversmiths. Arthur Stone's pieces are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Gardner Museum and others. The Smithsonian Archives of American Art include extensive records documenting silversmith production by Arthur Stone and his workshop. Biography of Arthur Stone by Herman Glendenning gives a fascinating view of the life of this very talented artist. He was one of the last American silversmiths to train apprentices in the art of handwrought silver. The present footed bowl is a study in graceful simplicity- a cinquefoil shaped form with a three part border on a circular footed base. This piece was made by Herbert A. Taylor for Arthur Stone, fully hallmarked on the base. Diameter: 8.75 inches Height: 1.5 inches Condition: Very Good, light surface wear commensurate with age
