About the Item

A fine antique French silver sugar sifter decorated with floral garlands and dating from the early 19th century. The lightly made sugar sifter stands on a wide round foot with a gilded finish with a round tall, graduated round body with a narrow-raised screw finish neck. The cover is of tall domed shape with narrow gilded screw on collar. The body of the vase has a very fine engine finished ground pattern and is applied in relief with hanging floral garlands set between bows with hanging sprigs with smaller decorative arrangements containing a sickle and scythe along with basket and hat with the patterns repeated around the body of the shaker. The cover is similarly decorated with flowers and floral garlands and with a molded floral rim around the lower section. The shaker has silver marks to the base with a further silver mark to the rim of the cover. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In presentable used condition with wear associated with age and use. There is some misshaping to the top of the shaker and around the foot with some age rubbing to the gilded elements.
