About the Item
A rare and finely crafted George II Rococo sterling silver sauce boat by James Shruder, London, 1744. This substantial and heavy example is raised on a shaped pedestal foot chased with scrolling foliage. The fluted body features alternating panels of finely chased flowers and foliage on a matted ground, beneath a shaped, scrolling rim. The front is embellished with a Rococo cartouche, while the reverse is chased as a shell. The double-scroll handle, capped with acanthus leaves and surmounted by a shell, completes this elegant mid-18th-century design.
This sauce boat is in very good condition, with very minor surface scratches commensurate with age and use. It weighs 771g or 24.79 Troy ounces.
Note: During the reign of King George II (1727–1760), the English Rococo style emerged as a whimsical and lighthearted departure from the rigid, heavy Palladian classicism that preceded it. While the French Rococo was often more delicate, the English version maintained a certain masculine proportion, as exemplified in this sauce boat.
